How do sex coefficients affect the equation?

These equations use binary sex coefficients and do not represent everyone. If these coefficients do not fit your situation, treat the estimate as a rough starting point and consider individual guidance and longer-term observations.

BEHIND THE NUMBERS

How the Mifflin–St Jeor equation works

Use weight W in kilograms, height H in centimetres and age A in years. The male coefficient gives 10W + 6.25H − 5A + 5; the female coefficient gives 10W + 6.25H − 5A − 161. Imperial inputs are converted first. Body-fat percentage does not change this page’s equation.

Male coefficient, age 30, 80 kg, 180 cm: 800 + 1,125 − 150 + 5 = 1,780 kcal/day

This is resting energy, not a daily food prescription. Open the daily calorie calculator to add an activity assumption, or inspect a lean-mass approach in the Katch calculator. Binary coefficients are a simplification of the published equation and do not fit everyone.

THE DETAILS

How the calculator works

Equations, assumptions and limitations.

Does Mifflin–St Jeor require body-fat percentage?

No. It uses kilograms, centimetres, age and a sex coefficient. This page keeps Mifflin selected even if another tool saved a body-fat value.

Is my Mifflin result how many calories I should eat?

No. It estimates resting energy. Total daily needs also include movement, exercise and the thermic effect of food. Use the TDEE calculator to choose an activity factor.

Does the equation work for everyone?

It predicts from population data rather than measuring you. This tool is for generally healthy adults and does not support children, pregnancy, breastfeeding or medical nutrition therapy.
